Abstract: Compounds of the DBT family are rather resistant to removal by HDS, but they are easier oxidized by active oxygen than thiophenes. The goal of this work is to study in detail ODS of heterocyclic sulfur-compounds in gas-vapor phase over CuZnAl-O and Cu/CeO2 catalysts. The oxidant (O2 and O3), molar ratio O2/S, LHSV, GHSV and temperature were varied within a wide range for the purpose of increasing sulfur removal efficiency. The data on the efficiency of the gas-phase desulfurization of hydrocarbon fuels will be compared with the literature data on their peroxide oxidation. The gas phase oxidative desulfurization of refractory sulfur compounds with air was shown to be feasible at atmospheric pressure and temperatures 350-400°С. The reactivity of different sulfur containing molecules in ODS over catalysts increased in the sequence: thiophene<DBT<DMDBT. During this process heterocyclic sulfur-compounds transform to sulfur dioxide, and hydrocarbon fragments are oxidized to carbon dioxide and water.
