Based on experimental data, we propose the following physical model of the catalytic filamentous carbon (CFC) granule formation. At the initial stage filament growth over Ni crystallites provides a catalyst particle transformation into a system of rare agglomerates, consisting of carbon and catalyst. The distance between agglomerates is by an order of magnitude bigger than their diam. At this stage, the strength of granules is relatively low. The distance between filaments narrows in the course of their growth, and the inner structure of agglomerate transforms gradually into a system of densely packed filaments. The growing CFC filaments are sewing agglomerates. The strength of the CFC granule increases markedly. The granule transforms to uniform system of densely packed filament, but not a system of agglomerates. Only the granule surface and biggest cracks exhibit some traces of agglomeration nature. During the main period of CFC formation, the granule grows due to its simultaneous cracking and filling crack with the carbon filaments that sew the local defects in the granule. If Ni concn. in the initial catalyst is not high, CFC filaments do not sew the agglomerates in time. As a result, the strength of the resulting granule decreases sharply.
