The state of dispersed platinum in aluminum-platinum catalysts modified by chloride or bromide ions was studied using CO as a probe. Dispersed particles of the metal and divalent platinum ions that are bonded directly to chloride and bromide ions are present on the surface of γ-Al2O3 after reduction of the catalysts with hydrogen at 823 K. The ratio of the halide and platinum in the charged forms is close to two.
