As early as in 1990s, a new era in the development of porous solid materials commenced with the appearance of a novel class of porous solid materials - zeolite analogues - constituted by isolated metal ions interconnected by polytopic organic ligands into multidimensional structures. In 2000s, the area of the metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) expanded greatly, due to the low cost, the versatility of the organic ligands chemistry and coordination chemistry of metal ions. The structures of the resulting porous MOFs featured void volumes of variable size and topologies and metal centers accessible by guest molecules that suggested such applications as selective sorption, gas storage, sensing and separation, ion exchange and catalysis. The efforts to incorporate enantiomerically pure homochiral building blocks into microporous materials, in turn, created potential opportunities for enantiomeric recognition, sorption and separation, and asymmetric catalysis. So far, examples of successful stereoselective recognition and catalysis by MOFs are rather scarce, but this number is continuously increasing, and, taking into account the importance of chirality in living nature, we foresee a rapid development of new homochiral metal-organic frameworks capable of such applications in near future. In this commentary, we present an overview of known homochiral metal-organic materials capable of stereoselective recognition, sorption and separation of guest molecules and those promoting asymmetric catalytic processes inside the chiral pores. © 2011 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
