Abstract: A model of the catalysis of burning of sublimable solid single-component fuels was developed on the basis of a study of burning in the system HClO4-NH3-Fe2O3. In the burning of NH4ClO4 without catalysts, the decomposition rate is proportional to the surface area. Formulas developed for the fuel-burning rate made it possible to plot diagrams of the relation of burning rate to pressure. The model of catalysis of burning of NH4ClO4 shows the relation of the increase in burning rate to the radius of the catalyst grains. The increase in the burning rate is especially marked when the radius decreases to <0.2 μ. The maximum increase in the reaction rate occurs at a catalyst concentration of 4%. The methods and models of calculation are general and can be used to calculate the burning rate of other perchlorates with other catalysts.
