Lignin is the second most abundant natural raw material after cellulose on the earth, occupying 15–40% of typical dry lignocellulosic biomass and considered the only scalable and renewable feedstock composed of aromatic monomers. The present study attempted a two-step depolymerization procedure of Enzolv pretreated birch wood (BW) biomass and catalysts for the selective production of low molecular weight (LMW) aromatics. The optimization of catalysts on carbon supports proved that 1% Ru/C to be a better choice with an increased monomeric yield of 5.2 to 24.9% over Ni/C (1% and 3%) for organosolv birchwood lignin. Most lignins in BW were converted to aromatics on partial digestion of cellulose. Under Enzolv/enzymatically pretreated optimized conditions and in the absence of an external hydrogen source, catalytically depolymerized BW using 1% Ru/C resulted in the fabrication of more than 20.4% of aromatics over control. Furthermore, under highly reduced conditions, the coupling of BW depolymerized residue and catalysts confirmed the presence of monomeric units with a greater surface area (< 1 nm). The enzymatic and catalytic coupled approach yielded low molecular mass aromatic compounds, including syringol, catechol, guiacol, eugenol, coniferyl alcohol, homovanillic acid, and 4-ethyl phenol. The optimized method provides mechanistic insight into effective lignin depolymerization of BW mediated by decarbonylation and hydrogenolysis reactions.
