Abstract: A review. An extremely high activity of rhodium carbonyls in alkene hydroformylation (by three to four orders of magnitude relative to cobalt carbonyls) was first observed by Schiller in 1952. Any phosphine-free rhodium catalysts can hardly be used in industry because of their low selectivity for linear products (n/iso < 1). In addition, the formation and stability of rhodium carbonyl hydride requires even higher syngas pressure than that for CoH(CO)4. The sections in this article are: Fundamental Principles of Hydroformylation General Features and Scope Homogeneous Oxo Catalysts and Process Parameters Cobalt Catalysts Rhodium Catalysts Catalysts other than Cobalt and Rhodium Compounds Reaction Mechanism Types of Solid Oxo Catalyst Hydroformylation with Immobilized Metal Complex Catalysts Supported Metal Complex Catalysts Supported Solid-Phase Catalysts (SSPCs) Supported Liquid-Phase Catalysts Supported Aqueous-Phase Catalysts Supported Ionic Liquid Catalysts Supported Hydrogen-Bonded Catalyst Supported Metal Complex Catalysts Catalysts Anchored onto Ion-Exchange Resins Catalysts Prepared by Covalent Grafting Catalysts Prepared by Coordinative Anchoring Encapsulated Metal Complex Catalysts Hydroformylation over Supported Metal Catalysts
