Autothermal reforming of methane is considered a potential hydrogen source for the future since it offers competitive costs compared with the conventional steam methane reforming. Methane autothermal reforming has not been widely investigated yet, and its economic feasibility has not been improved enough so far. Moreover, the reactor simulation of methane ATR has not been properly validated with experimental data to perform a robust and detailed optimization of the process. Based on the lack of documents in the literature dealing with the analysis of reactor modeling for methane ATR, a comprehensive review to analyze and discuss the reactor models for methane ATR was conducted. A 2-D heterogeneous reactor model is proposed based on the results of the literature analysis. The operating temperature, air-to-fuel, water-to-fuel, and gas-hourly space-velocity were found to be the most explored input parameters.
