A study was carried out on the structure of monocrystals of Na4H4(VO)[PMo4V8O40] 20H2O (space group P21/m) with
a = 10.860, b = 21.312, c = 11.654 A, and B = 106.73(3)o. The distinguishing feature of this heteropoly compound (HPC) is the addition of one VO3+ cation arranged randomly (2/3 and 1/3) at two of the heteropoly anion (HPA) positions to each Keggin-type heteropoly anion. This study indicated general features of the structure of HPC A3+n[PMo12-nVnO10] mH2O with n from 0 to 12 entailing mainly different means for compensation of the increasing negative charge of the
HPA with replacement of Mo(VI) by V(V). Analysis of the IR spectra of the entire HPC series showed that A950+/A782 ratio may be used to find an approximate value of n for n > 6. The Raman spectra must be used for n < 6.
