Abstract:
This work aims to investigate the properties of Cu-containing zeolites with respect to methane activation and conversion to methanol and other valuable chemicals. Particularly, the reactivity of two types of Cu species (isolated Cu2+ cations and small CuO clusters) introduced separately into H-ZSM-5 zeolites has been analyzed using different spectroscopic techniques. The initial state of Cu sites as well as its change during the interaction with methane have been studied with UV-DRS, EPR, IR, XPS methods. On the other hand, the process of methane activation by Cu species has been investigated with solid-state NMR spectroscopy. The kinetics of H/D exchange between methane and Cu-modified zeolites has been monitored and the formation of surface intermediates has been detected with 1H and 13C CP/MAS NMR in situ at elevated temperatures. The reactivity of observed intermediates (methoxy species) formed as the result of methane C–H bond cleavage has been studied.
