A method for removal of nitrogen oxides from exhaust gases provides for passing the exhaust gas through a catalyst layer in the presence of ammonia or an ammonia-containing compound at a temperature of 180-600 °C. The catalyst consists of at least two parts. The ammonia or the ammonia-containing compound is introduced between the two parts of the catalyst layer. Each consecutive direction of flow of the exhaust gas and of the cleaned gas is reversed when the gas mixture reaches a temperature of 30-400 °C at a distance from the point at which the exhaust gas enters the catalyst layer equivalent to 10-90 % of the total height of the catalyst layer.
