Improvements are made in the prepn. of 2-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol by transalkylation of 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol (I) with 4-methylphenol (II) in the presence of a tungstic heteropolyacid catalyst. The process is simplified and the yield is improved: (1) by using 0.05-0.5 wt.% heteropolyacid (vs. reaction mass); (2) by adding H2SO4 in a wt. ratio of 0.2-2.0 to the heteropolyacid; and (3) by using a mol ratio of I/II of 1.0:(1.0-1.2).
