In the title oxidn., high catalyst activity and minimal corrosion of metal app. are obtained by using a salt of divalent Pd with a noncomplexing anion [e.g., PdSO4, Pd(NO3)2, or Pd(OAc)2] as the catalyst and using heteropoly or isopoly acids or their salts with redox potential >0.35 V as the oxidizing agent. The catalyst activity is increased further by adding salts of Cu, Fe, or V with noncomplexing anions.
