The unsteady-state condition is generated in a catalytic reactor by periodic reversal of flow of the reaction mixt. over a fixed bed of catalysts. The app. includes a cylindrical vessel with the catalyst supported on a grid and inlet and outlet nozzles for the gas. In order to increase the catalyst life, flat inserts are placed inside the catalyst layer in rows, perpendicular to the axis of the vessel. The ratio of the total area of inserts to the area of cross section of the app. is 0.15-0.5 and the distance between adjacent rows is 0.5-3.0 times the equiv. diam. (D) of the insert, as detd. by D = 2(S/π)0.5, where S is the area of the insert.
