NH3 manuf. by feeding a N-H mixt. onto a catalyst at 300-600° and 100-320 atm under adiabatic conditions was improved to increase the efficiency (by smoothing the temp. profile of the reaction) by feeding the N-H mixt. onto a catalyst at 420-590°. The catalysts were heated by the input and output being exchanged cyclically or by feeding onto the catalyst a N-H mixt. at temp. cyclically varying from 20 to 590°. In the 1st case, the temp. of the input gas is 20-150° over a 5-30 min cycle, and in the 2nd, over length of the cycle is 10-40-min.
