Silica gel is prepd. by pptn. from an alk. silicate with an ammonium salt of a strong acid at 20-70°, followed by exchange of the Na+ to NH4+ and repeptization of the resulting hydrogel. To obtain a silica gel with a controlled surface area, the pptn. and the ion exchange are conducted at a const. pH (1-10). The latter is maintained by simultaneous introduction of the alk. silicate and acid in a soln. of an NH4 salt of a strong acid. The ion exchange is carried out at const. pH lower than the pH of pptn.
