CH3CHO is prepd. by oxidizing C2H4 in the presence of an aq. soln. of Pd and Cu salts as the catalyst. The yield is increased and the catalyst soln. is stabilized by adding malonic or maleic acid, or their mixt., or their alkyl or aryl derivs. to the catalyst. The resulting catalyst soln. is heated to 90° and a mixt. of C2H4 and O alternated with pure O is blown through the soln.
