MeOH is detd. in air and in alc.-air mixts. by measuring the concn. of its oxidn. products over a catalyst. To ensure complete oxidn., Co3O4 on active Al2O3 is used as the catalyst. The latter is prepd. by multiple impregnation of the active Al2O3 with a satd. soln. of Co(NO3)2, followed by drying and calcining at 400-450°. The catalyst contains ≥40% Co3O4.
