Carbonyl compounds such as acetaldehyde, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone and methyl butyl ketone are made by the liquid phase oxidation of olefins with O2 in the presence of a catalyst comprising an aqueous solution of a palladium compound, a polyacid containing molybdenum and vanadium and another acid which is halidefree and at most weakly reactive with the palladium compound.
