The steam sorbent consists of a mixt. of silica gel and 15-55 wt.% hygroscopic material (e.g., CaCl2, MgCl2, LiBr) dispersed in the silica gel. An alc. soln. of a silica precursor (e.g., 10-60 vol.% tetramethoxysilane or tetraethoxysilane) is hydrolyzed and condensed using a 30-40 wt.% aq. soln. of the hygroscopic materials at 293-323 K in the presence of a catalyst, e.g., NaF, KF, NH4F, NH4OH, HNO3, HCl, H2SO4 or HF. The resulting gel is dried to <5 wt.% water.
