Calorimetric and chromatography data were used to determine various stages in the formation of crystal TiCl3 by the reduction of TiCl4 with organoaluminum compounds. Interaction of TiCl4 with Et2AlCl and EtAlCl2 was examined, at -65° to 25°, and the composition of gaseous products formed in the reaction was examined at -60° to 250°. Heat effect of the TiCl4-organoaluminum complex formation and the heat of crystallization of TiCl3 were 6.7-7.5 and
21-2 kcal/mole, resp. The decomposition of complex with the formation of Ti3+ compounds occurred without significant heat effect. The highest heat effect was observed at TiCl4-Et2AlCl ratio 1.1-1.5, which was significantly decreased on a further increase of TiCl4 content. No significant increase in heat effect was observed on heating from -65° to -5°, whereas an increase approaching the value at room temp. was observed at >0°
