The decrease in activity during use of a Fe oxide-MoO3 catalyst in the title oxidation was primarily caused by formation of volatile Mo compounds, esp. alkoxides. The partial pressure of volatile Mo compounds was proportional to the concentration of MeOH, and increased with increasing temperature, Mo content in the catalyst, decreasing O concentration, and decreasing size of catalyst particles. An equation for the distribution of volatile compounds along the catalyst bed was developed.
