The Fe-Bi-Mo catalysts were prepared by 2 different methods from Mo(VI) acid (I), Bi(OH)3 (II), and Fe(OH)3 (III) and studied by x-ray structural analysis, DTA, EPR, and IR spectroscopy. The 1st type of catalysts was prepared by boiling I, II, and III and the overall composition of the catalyst corresponded to the formula (Fe2O3)x(Bi2O3)1-x.3MoO3. The 2nd type was prepared by boiling Fe(OH)3 with the previously prepared. Bi molybdate Bi2O3.3MoO3 (the so-called
α-phase). The composition of this catalyst corresponds to the formula (Fe2O3)x(Bi2O3.3MoO3)1-x. In the samples prepared by the 1st method the interaction of the catalyst components leads to the formation of Bi(III)- and
Fe(III)-molybdates, whereas during the interaction of Fe(OH)3 with the Bi(III)-molybdate the binary Bi-Fe molybdate
(X-phase, Fe2Bi2Mo2O12) is formed along with the usual molybdates of Bi and Fe. Max. content of the X-phase in the catalyst corresponds to 54 mol. % of Fe2O3.
