Active alumina and catalysts based upon it are usually obtained by thermal decomposition of hydroxide. Since great importance attaches to elucidation of factors influencing size of surface of active alumina, study was made of effect of heating temperature on specific surface and dispersity of alumina obtained by thermal decomposition of boehmite, bayerite, and amorphous hydroxide. Specific surface of alumina and character of its temperature dependence depend on structure of hydroxide. During conversion of boehmite to U-Al2O3, specific surface of dehydration products remains constant up to 750 C. Roasting of bayerite and amorphous hydroxide is accompanied by marked increase in surface, but thermal stability of alumina in this case is low. A comparison is made of specific surface areas calculated from measurements of argon adsorption and from x-ray data on areas of coherent scattering.
