A newly developed, stable, and regenerable solid superacid catalyst, HETACAT, was evaluated in the alkylation of isobutane with butenes for bench-scale manuf. of high-quality gasoline alkylate. A catalyst productivity of 0.8 g
alkylate/g catalyst-h, with 90-93 motor octane no., was achieved and maintained for ∼400 h on stream. Of the reactor regimes examd. (e.g., gas-phase, liq.-phase, and three-phase), the most effective was the liq-phase regime. To minimize catalyst deactivation, the recommended max. concns. of contaminants were sulfur <10, water <10, alkali <5, and diolefins <100 ppm.
