The content of oxides in the form of insoluble compounds of the spinel type (ZnCr2O4, FeCr2O4) increased from 72 wt. % in the fresh industrial Cr-Zn-Fe catalyst used in the dehydration of butylenes to 74.3 wt. % after activation; this increase was due to the continuation of spinel formation at this stage. Most of the fresh catalyst was in a highly-dispersed x-ray amorphous state, although it contained a certain amount of compounds with the spinel structure. This high dispersion decreased markedly during activation, and crystallization of the spinel occurred. This was also accompanied by an increase in the sp. magnetization for the various samples (from 0.3-2.0 to 5.2 oe.), and by an increase in the porous structure of the catalyst. The selectivity of the catalyst during the dehydration of butylene increased as a result of an increase in the radius of the fine pores during activation and a decrease in the sp. surface. A definite relation existed between the sp. surface after activation and the lifetime of the catalyst: the greater the surface, the longer the lifetime of the catalyst. The value of the sp. surface after activation depended strongly on the temp. of the activation step. Activation at lower temps. increased substantially the lifetime of the catalyst. The decrease in the sp. surface in the initial stage was more rapid and slowed down with aging. However, the decrease continued during the whole period of the catalyst performance, and its intensity was det. to a marked degree by the temperature conditions during the operating time and during the regeneration of the catalyst. The influence of the temp. on the decrease of the sp. surface of the catalyst was especially strong at temperatures >640-650°.
