Abstract: The catalytic properties of samples of uranium nitride of different chemical composition, alpha-U2N3 and UN1.70, are compared. In both cases, isotopic exchange occurs via the reversible, dissociative adsorption of nitrogen. Despite the similarity of the structural and thermodynamic properties of the phases, the heat of adsorption of nitrogen differs by 120 kj/mole. This leads to a marked difference in the catalytic properties of the samples. It is shown that isotopic exchange serves as a reliable characteristic of molecular nitrogen activation and its ability to enter into ammonia synthesis.
