Abstract: Kinetics of complete catalytic reduction of sulfur dioxide by methane in the presence of a γ-Al2O3 catalyst was studied in a flow-type laboratory installation. Mixtures containing 8 - 9% of oxygen and 12 - 15% of SO2 (by volume) were used to simulate the composition of ''strong'' metallurgic exhaust gases. Data obtained enable one to determine the most important chemical reactions occurring at 650 - 850°C in the system under investigation. Results of thermodynamic analysis are also reported. The kinetic model is formulated, and the numerical values of the rate constants and activation energies are estimated for a number of reactions in the course of model identification.
