Abstract:
1. Oxidation of dimethylsulphide using atmospheric oxygen at 120° to 150°C was studied under a pressure of 2 to 5 MPa in the presence of a copper phenate catalyst (output up to 1000 mole dimethylsulphoxide calculated as 1 g·atm Cu/hr).
2. Kinetic equations established that the reaction for oxygen is zero order and for dimethylsulphide, first order. Selectivity for dimethylsulphoxide is close to 100%, independent of reaction conditions at a dimethylsulphide conversion lower than 80%; at higher conversions secondary reactions of oxidation of dimethylsulphoxide take place.
