Abstract:
Dimethoxymethane (DMM) and dimethyl ether (DME) are environmentally benign oxygenated compounds of C1 chemistry with a wide scope of applications. Nowadays, these compounds are generally produced from methanol. It is worth noting that DME and DMM synthesis on the basis of renewable feedstocks based on CO2 produced from biogas and hydrogen supplied by water electrolysis are under development now. In past decades DMM and DME have been recognized as a promising feedstock for production of hydrogen for fuel cell feeding [1,2]. Recently, we proposed efficient bifunctional catalyst CuO-CeO2/γ-Al2O3 for DME and DMM steam reforming [1] reactions showing high promises for PEMFC applications. However, steam reforming needs too much external heating to perform the endothermic process and the evaporation of water. Hydrogen production by partial oxidation (PO) reaction usually shows several advantages over steam reforming, including short response time, compactness, “water independence” and easy start-up of the SOFC-based power units.
Literature survey revealed no references devoted to PO DMM and respective catalysts. This reaction can be expressed as: CH3OCH2OCH3 + 0,5О2 = 4Н2 + 3СО
In our PO DMМ experiments, we used noble-metal-based catalysts which are known for their high performance in PO DME [2].
Herein, we report the results of studies on PO DMM over supported noble metal catalyst, which prove the feasibility of the reaction for synthesis gas production. Comparative analysis of the catalyst behaviour in PO DMM and PO DME was performed.
